The Machine Learning Tactics Behind PavCon’s Predictive Models for the Air Force


With petabytes of sensitive information in its possession, strategy and engineering firm PavCon LLC uses Amazon Web Services Inc. to secure its data as a U.S. Air Force contractor. The company also uses this information to improve its current systems and leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence to predict potential threats and future maintenance.

“A lot of Air Force data is entered by humans, so it’s manual, which means it’s open and there are a lot of errors in that data. So we have a strong focus on data integrity, ”said Milissa Pavlik (photo), President and CEO of PavCon LLC. “What we did was we looked at supervised and unsupervised [machine learning] models, we took a totally different approach to imbue it with domain expertise.

Pavlik spoke with Jean Furrier, host of theCUBE, the live streaming studio of SiliconANGLE Media, at the AWS Summit event in Washington, DC. They discussed using machine learning to help the Air Force, modernizing the Air Force with predictive maintenance models and more. (* Disclosure below.)

Fly into the cloud

Using the power of machine learning, PavCon was able to reduce the time spent monitoring data, freeing up resources for tasks such as predictive maintenance, which analyzes the condition of the hardware to determine when maintenance is needed.

“In this case, we’re talking about focusing on those top drivers, and depending on what kind of data we have, that helps us dictate supervision versus supervision and go the unsupervised route,” Pavlik said. She continued that while some scenarios still require supervision, with more automation and more automated data collection, non-supervision will be the way to go.

When it came to adapting to today’s digital economy while protecting valuable information, PavCon entrusted AWS with the management of sensitive information, leveraging its massive and scalable infrastructure.

“When we started down this path and had to quickly identify a format and host location that would not only allow us to handle large amounts of data, but also do all the in-depth analysis we needed to AWS GovCloud is where this came in, ”Pavlik mentioned. “They have great native services that are in their cloud, as well as the easy pairing and collaboration between not only licensed products, but also anything free and open source. “
