Stardust sex toy store owner avoids jail time and $420,000 fine: report

DEKALB COUNTY, GA – The owner of a now-closed sex toy store in Brookhaven was facing $420,000 in fines and jail time for multiple contempt of court citations, but a DeKalb County judge ruled that he did not have to serve either sentence, the Atlanta Constitution-Journal reported.

Stardust was ordered to close when Brookhaven passed a new law in 2013 that made it illegal to operate a “sex business” near a similar business or residential area, the AJC reported. Michael Morrison, the owner, was originally sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay $420,000 in fines by DeKalb Superior Court Judge Mark Anthony Scott, the AJC reported.

According to a press release shared by the City of Brookhaven in May 2020, litigation between the city and Stardust has been ongoing since 2014 in the state and federal ourt. City officials said in the statement that the sex shop could harm the redevelopment of the Buford Highway Cooridor.
