LAKELAND – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon at the intersection of Cherry Lane and Tower Palms Lane in unincorporated Lakeland, according to a press release.

The accident resulted in the death of Robert Black, Jr., 70, of Lakeland.

According to the preliminary investigation, Black was driving a 2007 white Harley Davidson eastbound on Cherry Lane. PCSO officials said Aointed Davis, 33, of Lakeland, was driving westbound on Cherry Lane in a gray 2001 Nissan Red at the same time.

Detectives say Davis attempted to make a southbound turn on Tower Palms Lane when his SUV struck the front of Black’s motorcycle. Black was thrown from the motorcycle as a result of the impact.

Sheriff officials say Black was not wearing a helmet. He died at the scene.

Davis and his son, a passenger in the SUV, were wearing their seat belts and were not injured, according to the reports.

Cherry Lane was closed for about two and a half hours.

No charges are expected, but officials say a final decision is pending investigation.
