Murder in a toy store: the attacker arrested, the police recover a knife

Chandigarh Police on Thursday arrested a man for allegedly stabbing a toy shop owner to death and leaving his wife injured at Market Booth in Sector 26, Bapu Dham Colony on Wednesday.

Police say the man – identified as Jai Kishan – was arrested on Wednesday night for the murder of Avtar Singh. Avtar’s wife, Simranjit Kaur, was injured in the incident.

Investigators said they recovered the knife, which was used in the crime. Police said Jai Kishan was brought before a local court, which took him into custody. Avtar’s body, meanwhile, was returned to his family after an autopsy on Thursday. According to the police, the initial autopsy report suggests that the victim had received acute injuries to the heart. Avtar’s wife Simranjit’s health condition is declared stable and she will soon be discharged from PGI.

Police claimed that Jai Kishan stabbed Avtar following a business dispute as there was fierce competition between the two. Avtar ran a toy store in rented premises. Jai Kishan, who also runs a toy store, observed this store.

In her statement to the police, Simranjit Kaur said that Jai Kishan was forcing her husband to leave their rented store. A case of murder has been registered at the Sector 26 police station. Sources said an argument broke out between the two shopkeepers on Wednesday, after which Jai Kishan went to get a knife from his shop and attacked Avtar. When Simranjit tried to intervene and save her husband, she was also stabbed in the abdomen.
