Is the toy store in Home Alone 2: Lost In New York real?

Duncan’s toy box in Home Alone 2 doesn’t exist, but it was inspired by an actual store

You’d think being home alone for a Christmas was bad enough, but for Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McAllister, it’s happened twice.

Ok, so technically he hasn’t been left home twice, but getting on the wrong plane to New York while the rest of your family leaves for Miami is even worse.

That’s of course what happened to young Kevin in Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, the sequel to the original 1990 Christmas hit where Kevin finds himself fending off the same burglars he put behind bars in The first movie.

Except it’s not his house he’s defending this time, it’s the toy store every young kid dreams of, Duncan’s Toy Chest.

It certainly looks like a real toy store – but does it actually exist in real life and can you visit it?

Here’s what you need to know…

Here is the bad news. Duncan’s Toy Chest unfortunately doesn’t exist – and in fact, it wasn’t even filmed in New York.

In fact, the scenes set in the toy store were filmed in Chicago, with the exterior of the store being the Rookery Building, a landmark in the city that has also been filmed in films such as The Untouchables.

As for inside the store, where Kevin receives a pair of ceramic doves as a gift?

It was filmed at Chicago’s Uptown Theater – which has also been featured in films such as I Love Trouble and Backdraft.

The answer is yes, it was – with the real-life FAO Schwarz toy store that inspired Duncan’s.

FAO Schwarz’s is the oldest toy store in the United States, having opened its doors in Baltimore in 1862 before moving to New York in 1870, and operating in several locations – including its Fifth Avenue site where it remained for 55 years.

The brand filed for bankruptcy in 2003 and permanently closed its Fifth Avenue store in 2015 – but a new branch has since reopened in New York at Rockefeller Plaza.

The store featured in Tom Hanks’ 1988 box office hit Big, when he and co-star Robert Loggia dance to the store’s giant dancing piano.
